Venus ventus temerarus – Ovidius

Venus favors the bold – Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso).

Wherever your next space destination is, don’t forget to swing by the Evening Star before it becomes the Morning Star. Venus’s mass, at just over 80% of Earth’s, might even give you an extra gravitational kick. Why not to save some on fuel; money doesn’t grow on asteroids, you know. The recession our galaxy is experiencing may drag on and we don’t want to start canceling our space exploration plans. Do your math right though, you don’t want to land there unless you enjoy acid baths in the temperature that boils sulfur. Pity, if you do. Wear your coolest shades. Venus is exceptionally bright this year, even when seen from the San Valley near Przemyśl.

Venus favors the bold. We boldly redesigned the chart again, let’s hope this new layout will stay unchanged for a while. Not much success in predicting the future. We’ll switch to coffee grinds or, better still, wine sediment readings soon.

I’ve seen the future, brother

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Instead of commiserating with the doomed mankind to the tune of Cohen’s anthem The Future, we are announcing a new feature in our Daily Charts. They are becoming a true space travel tool with the inclusion of weekly forecasts. The forecasts are shown in faint colours and are based on our deep knowledge of the subject, years of experience in Sanspotting and the old fashioned science of tea leaf reading also known as tasseography. More about Sanspotting is coming soon.

I’ve been switching between I and we throughout these notes. The reader is free to interpret using we as either a bad case of pluralis majestatis or the attempt to suggest that there is a group behind this project.

The Sun Activity and the San River Levels at Przemyśl

The Sun is spotty while San loses water

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Not without butterflies in the stomach I have noticed that there are 14 spots on the Sun as I’m writing this note. No wonder the river San is receding. Yet these are quiet times on the surface of our furnace and no serious freckles will show until late 10s of this century. Happy space traveling.

Daily Sun Activity in the San Valley at Przemyśl

Dobry wojak SzwejkI was inspired by my friends at who diligently watch the San River levels at Przemyśl. In an honest, perhaps futile effort to outdo them, I decided to trace daily Sun activity in these charts. I’ll be showing 10.7 cm Solar Flux plotted against the SESC Sunspot Number and, you guessed it, the San river levels at Przemyśl. The data sources are Space Weather Prediction Center and Pogodynka, joined Polish and American taxpayers’ dollars working harmoniously their hardest.

Przemyśl is definitely the best place to start any trip, interstellar including.  Its claims to fame are many, but nothing beats the visit by “The Good Soldier Švejk” memorized in this nice statue.

So, if you are about to start your cosmic adventure with a pleasant picnic in the San valley near Przemyśl, here is what you check first. New data will be posted frequently.
